These types of behaviors should be addressed like any other performance issue. It is always more effective to discuss these situations with an employee early in the process before it escalates and gets out of hand.Rickhttp://www.careermanagementresources.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25487894.post-46149193433293840892011-10-07T22:16:56.206-04:002011-10-07T22:16:56.206-04:00I work in a high stress environment of an emergenc...I work in a high stress environment of an emergency room. There are many strong personalities in our environment that generally just mesh together with team work. However, there are several employees that have terrible attitudes. Those toxic individuals have created a negative atmosphere in our work place. We have started a "Staff Satisfaction" team that meets monthly to come up with ideas on how to turn the negatives into positives. Showing appreciation by having special lunches and awards have been used with some positive outcomes. However, as long as the negative bad attitudes remain, the problem will not go away. Each time one of the naysayers is terminated or allowed to leave, the negative rumors start flying. This of course causes more negativity. Wonder if it will ever end.USMgrad2behttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09309142323856872809noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25487894.post-44503983909677082462011-09-23T13:27:01.619-04:002011-09-23T13:27:01.619-04:00The only thing I would add is a policy against bul...The only thing I would add is a policy against bullying. Although there is not legislation officially passed concerning bullying, bullying is now becoming prevalent in the workplace. Some attorneys are drawing comparisons to bullying and how sexual harassment situations were handled prior to legislation being passed. My experience would indicate that those comparisons are not even close but bullying is still an issue that needs to be addressed.Rickhttp://www.careermanagementresources.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25487894.post-43843340903938302762011-09-15T17:34:04.647-04:002011-09-15T17:34:04.647-04:00One other point to consider is to let the people y...One other point to consider is to let the people you work with (Boss, co-workers, team members, support staff, etc.)know you are working on managing your time better. You're also right that it's up to everyone - coworkers and managers alike - to tune into what's happening around them and express a genuine interest in others. The G.Neil blog teamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08078556653764987175noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25487894.post-46246590903884546422011-02-18T17:15:12.913-05:002011-02-18T17:15:12.913-05:00I am sure that you are right when you say that peo...I am sure that you are right when you say that people will laugh, however I find this very disturbing. Have we come so far in functioning in a silo that you would not notice a co-worker that passed out, let alone passed away! I have my own office, but I can assure you that people are in and out all day long and I hope that if no-one saw or heard from me for a while they would check on me. But was it focus or just lack of caring about what is going on around them that led to this unfortunate event? As peers, whether friends or not, we need to take the time to be human, inquiring with our co-workers if they are OK, and give a human touch to those around us!And the responsibility rests with everyone, not just the manager!Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01690503754333229504noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25487894.post-71612385059211675152011-02-16T19:05:24.082-05:002011-02-16T19:05:24.082-05:00It's a shame that more employees don't sha...It's a shame that more employees don't share your commitment to working while at work - and not playing on the internet. I think if organizations had strict, posted guidelines regarding using company computers for personal use, it would deter more employees from doing it. I am a nurse on a very busy Labor and Delivery unit. The hospital has clear guidelines for company computer use, but these rules are not enforced well on my unit. There are many reasons nurses should not "play" on computers during their shift. These include distraction from job responsibilities, inattention to patient care, and image portrayal. I would not be very reassured if the nurse caring for my family member was seen "surfing the web" instead of taking care of patients.Manager-in-the-makingnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25487894.post-71384440172750707012011-02-11T19:40:20.876-05:002011-02-11T19:40:20.876-05:00I totally agree with you - on all points. And what about type of discharge? Would dishonorably discharged vets get it too? I would also wonder about morale, particularly where some employees were opposed to military action. Employee attendance tracking could get pretty complicated too, with a new category, and only for some employees. Feeling left out and don't see an opportunity for them to move up the corporate ladder.

It is apparent that leadership and compensation framework in organizations is often the key to ensure that its employees retain and have the right mindset.

But at times leadeship might not be the only critical factor to ensure retention. Interpersonal work reationships between employees and departments are also important.

Especially in large organizations with many departments, mutual collaboration is required for each entity to achieve their individual goals. Often many disagreements arise due to opposing views and 'push away' of job responsibilities.

HR department in huge organizations often do not get to see the full picture as most of the time they are cooped up with their transactional roles to be bothered with the role of an employee champion. (Espcially in Asia)

The belief that tackling on such problems would heal the wounds of a high attrition rate is close to zero in the eyes of the management. This is no surprise as they often crave for immediate success and results which in this case is impossible.

Perhaps each entity/department should have their very own HR personnel, to assist if not observe and provide solutions of such issues to the line managers.

wondersAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25487894.post-46757616628564047072011-01-06T10:41:27.209-05:002011-01-06T10:41:27.209-05:00The information in this blog is really a appreciab...The information in this blog is really a appreciable. I think, especially during a time of economic crisis, layoffs, and 11 million people owing more on their homes than they're even worth, this kind of practice only stifles Americans abilities to pull themselves out of their debt. Many people didn't willfully fall in to bad debt. They lost a job, were injured, lost a spouse. To deny someone who you would otherwise hire based on previous credit history only hurts our country....unless their job directly involves accounting I don't feel this is a needed practice. Will Staneyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16171891204174692149noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25487894.post-24113456840712297282010-10-11T02:51:53.125-04:002010-10-11T02:51:53.125-04:00Yes I am fully agreed with you. The reality is, however, that sometimes fantasy scenarios are best left in our imaginations. The flight attendant is facing criminal prosecution, and could have injured (or killed) anyone working on the tarmac. Bottom line -- millions of people handle stress every day better than he did. He is fun entertainment but certainly no role model. He could have vented his anger in other ways. For example, dumping a drink on the rude passenger's head, tripping her in the jetway, flagging her as a terrorist in the airline's reservation system . . . Whoops.
